HORNBEAM DR., 4500 block, 2:03 p.m. Oct. 31. Two males and a female broke into a residence, then fled in a white four-door vehicle. Nothing was reported missing.

MAPLE AVE., 1000 block, 2:41 p.m. Nov. 1. Property was stolen from a residence. There was no sign of forced entry.

MASTERS DR., 7000 block, 7:04 a.m. Nov. 2. An unlocked residential garage was entered. Nothing was reported missing.

WHIRLAWAY LANE, 14500 block, 9:06 p.m. Oct. 30. An unlocked garage was entered at a residence. There was no sign of forced entry. A male was seen leaving the area in a dark-colored SUV.

16TH ST., 8500 block, 8:30 p.m. Nov. 3. Three men wearing masks forced their way into an apartment at gunpoint. The intruders tied up the occupants, then fled with property. A woman accompanied the three men.

When the occupant opened the door to look, three people rushed in and began ransacking the premises. A short time later, the four intruders fled with property. No injuries were reported.

A telling admission by the MoCO PD that it intentionally downgrades "hot burglaries" out of the "home invasion" category unless certain narrow circumstances are present. One must wonder who told them to do that????

Once again, this validates my classifying "police-identified burglaries" as suspected "home invasions" if there are (1) pinpointed offense times or (2) they take place during peak "at home" hours.

Man injured confronting burglars in his home
Police say investigation continues

While the injuries Mike Bonhag sustained during a confrontation with five men who broke into his Olney Mill home have healed, his anger remains.

Bonhag, 47, was awakened at 12:45 a.m. Aug. 3 by three loud booms coming from downstairs.

Because all the lights were out, he knew his wife and three children were asleep. As he turned the corner and flipped on the light in the family room, he saw five men who had entered through a shattered sliding-glass door.

"I yelled and they scrambled to get out, but I grabbed the last one," he said. "I wanted to hold on to him until the police got there, but the other four guys came back and started to kick and punch me, and he squirmed out of his shirt."

Bonhag suffered cuts on his feet from the broken glass and needed stitches in his right hand and staples in his head. He also suffered minor cuts on the right side of his face.

"They seemed scared," he said of the burglars. "When they saw me they were knocking each other down trying to get out the door."

Police were able to get partial fingerprints and sent the T-shirt to a laboratory to check the DNA.

Montgomery County Police crime analyst John Desoulis said police are still investigating and awaiting lab results.

"That's a slow process and there is a big backlog," he said. "Unfortunately, burglaries are down pretty far on the list."

Bonhag, who grew up in Ashton, has lived in the house on Falling Green Road for 19 years and said has never had any trouble before this incident.

"We had our five cars plus a company car in the driveway, so I am still baffled why someone would try to break in," he said. "We had just got back from vacation, so maybe they had noticed that the lights had been out all week."

Bonhag's home backs up to Olney Mill Park and is not particularly isolated.

In talking to neighbors, Bonhag said he learned of another recent incident on a nearby street where burglars entered through a sliding-glass door, but no one was home at the time.

Desoulis confirmed that there were two other incidents in Olney that same weekend where burglars entered homes through sliding-glass doors. In one case the homeowners were home and in the other no one was home.

Those incidents, however, were not in Olney Mill, he said.

"One was in the southwest quadrant of Olney and the other was in the southeast quadrant, so they're all pretty spread out," Desoulis said.

That news is unsettling to some area residents, including Bonhag.

"It's just disturbing, because Olney Mill is a nice neighborhood," he said.

Since the incident, Bonhag now leaves outdoor lights on at night and has installed motion detector lights.

Although the police classified the incident as a burglary, Bonhag said he considers it a home invasion.

"They came in while we were home and invaded our house and our property," he said.

Desoulis said the police consider a home invasion to be a robbery when the intruders force their way in past the homeowners and usually tie them up and rob them.

"In this case, the suspects were on their way out when the homeowner tried to detain them," he said. "If he had not done that, it would be a straight-up burglary."

Regardless of the label, Desoulis said police still consider it a serious crime.

He advises homeowners to secure their doors and not to detain a burglar if faced with a similar situation.

"These suspects were trying to get away, so we don't think their plan was to confront someone," he said. "No property was taken."

Bonhag said that he would react the same way if faced with the situation again.

"I would absolutely go after them again," he said. "They had no business being there."

National Park CCW on hold

Some of you guys know that National Park CCW was temporarily blocked by a federal judge in DC on Thursday. I read over he opinion and order.

My interpretation is that the judge is giving DOI until April 20 to decide what to do. She claimed that DOI failed to adequately analyze any "reasonably foreseeable" effects of the rule change, and she opined that any DGU is such an "Effect." She also said that DOI didn't provide enough explanation for why the rule change reversing past policy is needed.

I think DOI can meet these hurdles.

1) Environmental impact
DOI just needs to explain that DGU's may happen at a rate that is perhaps unquantifiable.

2) Reversing past policy
In 1983, there were pretty much NO CCW laws, so anyone carrying a loaded firearm was breaking the law. 25 years later, that is not the case.

Second suspect convicted in robbery, home invasion
Gaithersburg man guilty in shooting that left man paralyzed

A Gaithersburg man was convicted Monday in robbery and shooting that left a Germantown man paralyzed from the waist down last year.

Jeffrey Samuel Marcus, 30, of Orchard Drive in Gaithersburg, faces sentencing on Feb. 25 after the jury found him guilty Monday of six offenses, according to Assistant State's Attorney Amy Bills, who prosecuted the case. Marcus was convicted of first-degree assault, robbery with a dangerous weapon and first-degree burglary among other offenses, Bill said.

Marcus was acquitted of attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery, both charges involving two additional victims, Bills said.

A co-defendant in the case, Arthur A. Phillips, 28, of Gaithersburg is awaiting sentencing on 11 counts, including robbery with a dangerous weapon, first- degree assault and first degree burglary.

Court documents and testimony from the shooting victim in the first trial linked the crime to an attempt by the defendants to steal money and drugs left at the apartment on Crystal Rock Drive in Germantown by a friend of the victim.

The victim, 27, testified in November that he awakened in his bedroom Sept. 28, 2007, to find a masked man standing over him and yelling. The victim said the intruder shot him as he reached over to put on his glasses.

Two other roommates in the apartment are also identified as victims in the case. One had his nose broken by one or two of the assailants as they took his wallet and money. The intruders also stole a cell phone and money from a woman living in the apartment. She was uninjured.

A third defendant in the case, Bobby Allen Ebron, 34, of Gaithersburg received one year probation in January after pleading guilty to being an accessory to crimes committed by Phillips and Marcus. He was given one year probation in exchange for cooperating with the prosecution, according to court documents.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION - A Message from the Chief of Police on Burglaries

Chief Ricucci of the Takoma Park Police Department has received many inquiries and concerns from citizens regarding the influx of residential burglaries in the months of November and December 2008. Most alarming to the citizens is the fact that burglars are entering their homes while they are still in their homes, oftentimes sleeping. Homeowners are waking up to find intruders standing in their residences. Fortunately, in all instances, there has been no threat of violence and the intruder or intruders have left without incident.

The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is working around the clock focusing on these rash of burglaries. They are working together with our Crime Analyst, who is working with the surrounding jurisdictions of Prince George’s County, Montgomery County and the District of Columbia. The Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) is conducting a specific detail, in plainclothes, focusing their efforts and strategies to apprehending the subject(s) responsible for these crimes. The Chief has placed extra patrol units throughout the City in an effort to make police presence even more visible. ( . . .more)

Killer May Be Hunting Japanese Officials Associated With Loss of Pension Records

TOKYO, Nov. 19 -- Bureaucrats here have infuriated the Japanese public by losing millions of government pension records. This week, someone with a knife and a willingness to kill appears to be hunting them down.

Riddled with stab wounds, the bodies of Takehiko Yamaguchi, 66, and his wife, Michiko, 61, were found Tuesday morning in their home in a Tokyo suburb. Takehiko Yamaguchi was head of the Health and Welfare Ministry's pension division when the national pension system underwent a major record-keeping overhaul in 1985.

On Tuesday evening, Yasuko Yoshihara, 72, wife of former pension bureaucrat Kenji Yoshihara, 76, was stabbed in the chest by a man who came to her home in Tokyo claiming that he worked for a parcel delivery service, police said.

En route to a hospital she said that her husband, who was not at home when the attack occurred, "may be a target and is in danger," according to Japanese news media. Kenji Yoshihara's tenure as head of the Social Insurance Agency in the mid-1980s coincided with the botched computerization of Japan's pension records.

Millions of those records have since gone missing, outraging the elderly and contributing to the resignations of two prime ministers.

The mess continues, and many Japanese fear they may not receive full pension benefits on retirement.

The homes where the knife attacks occurred are about six miles apart. After each assault, a man fled on foot, leaving bloody footprints that police are trying to match.

Authorities said the attacks shared at least three elements: the backgrounds of the victims or intended victims; the use of a knife; and the place where the knifings occurred. In both houses, the victims were stabbed near the front door.

"We should never allow the culprit to commit a third crime, if the two cases are related," said Tsuyoshi Yoneda, chief of the National Police Agency's criminal bureau.

Police announced a nationwide alert for attacks against current and former government officials involved in welfare issues, and security at what is now the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry was boosted.

Prime Minister Taro Aso said Wednesday there is no conclusive evidence that the attacks are related. Still, Aso will cancel his regular morning walk for the time being.

"While I don't know if the two cases are connected, they are indeed distressing," he said. "I would like to pray for the souls of the departed and for the recovery of the wife."

Asked whether the stabbings may have been acts of vengeance or terrorism targeting former welfare officials, Aso told reporters, "I cannot comment at this stage, when we don't know whether they are simply cases of assault or murder or not."

Aso also said there is no firm evidence of a link between the incidents and the work histories of the two former vice ministers. They are believed to have had influential roles in pension policies.

The fatal attack on Yamaguchi and his wife probably occurred Monday evening, police said. The kitchen fan was left on, suggesting that the couple may have been cooking dinner when their attacker came.

Police said a man with bloody shoes fled the Yamaguchi house toward a nearby commuter train station. Police are checking security videotapes at the station.

Woman Had Lived in Fear Of Former Boyfriend
D.C. Victim Slain After Calling Police

Tiffany Gates was so afraid for her life that she began making her own funeral arrangements.

The 33-year-old had been stalked by her former boyfriend, who relatives said abused her for at least a year. In August, he set her Southeast Washington apartment on fire. On Friday, authorities said, he stabbed her to death after she dialed family members and 911. Gates was on the phone with a federal marshal as she was being attacked.

"He is here and kicking my door in," she told him. The marshal called for backup, but by the time he and D.C. police entered the building a short time later, Gates lay dying.

The killing was the culmination of a violent relationship, as described in court documents and by family members and friends. Police arrested her former boyfriend, Roderick A. Ridley, 31, who was hiding in a vacant apartment in the building. He was charged with second-degree murder while armed.

The marshal and a D.C. corrections officer, members of a regional fugitive task force who were looking for Ridley because he had escaped from a halfway house, were outside the apartment building when the attack occurred. Family members questioned why the men did not rush in before police arrived. Two law enforcement officials familiar with the details raised a similar point but spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case. Family members also said they wish Ridley had been charged with first-degree murder.

"Marshals were outside the door while they were stabbing her," said Manyka Gaither, a family friend. "It's an insult."

Dave Turner, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, said, "Our deputies are cooperating to the fullest extent possible with the ongoing investigations, but we are prohibited from discussing any details associated with the case."

Gates, a native of the District, graduated from Duke Ellington High School in 1992. She had worked at Housing Opportunities Unlimited and in her spare time styled hair for friends and family.

"She was always smiling and jovial," said Jacqueline Ellison, a longtime friend.

But her relationship with Ridley, friends said, was dark. Gaither said Ridley had frequently beaten Gates, who recently sought a clean break. She changed her telephone number, Gaither said. But that did not stop Ridley from showing up at her apartment with threats.

Gates and Ridley began dating in the summer of 2007, records show, and lived together for a while in the 3900 block of D Street SE, in the same apartment where she was killed. The relationship deteriorated, and she turned to the police and courts for help in August after a series of incidents.

Gates sought a temporary protection order after Ridley allegedly threatened her life, the records show. Gates accused Ridley of kicking and punching her and striking her head with a knife in a dispute at the apartment Aug. 12.

According to the filing, Ridley repeatedly called Gates, at one point saying that "she was going to die today and that they were going to die together." On Aug. 13, she asked police to help her retrieve her belongings. Ridley was there, and his behavior that night led to his arrest.

Ridley would not let police inside, according to charging papers filed in D.C. Superior Court. He allegedly screamed from the window that there would be "fireworks" and then set a couch on fire. As black smoke drifted out the window, police evacuated the building and called firefighters to the scene. Firefighters found a charcoal grill on the couch and a butane lighter in a nearby bedroom. Ridley also was in the bedroom, unconscious, the charging papers stated. He was briefly hospitalized and charged with arson.

A judge ordered that Ridley remain jailed pending trial. But when he pleaded guilty Oct. 9, the court permitted him to be released to a halfway house. He escaped Oct. 29.

On Aug. 13, Gates received the temporary protection order, which was good for two weeks. But with Ridley locked up at the time, she did not pursue a permanent order. Her court filing in August described a pattern of frightening conduct, including a February incident in which Ridley threatened to set her on fire in front of her 9-year-old child. The filing said Gates "fears for her life."

The night she died, Gates dialed 911 about midnight and reported that Ridley was yelling threats outside her window, but when police arrived, they could not find him. At 12:19 a.m., Gates called the marshal, identified in the affidavit as Inspector Robert Hoffmaster, who went to the scene at 1:25 a.m. and called Gates from his car two minutes later.

After the conversation ended with Gates screaming, Hoffmaster called for police backup. He told investigators that he stayed in his car until police arrived. They had trouble entering the building but eventually roused a tenant who let them in. Police found Gates on the third floor.

She was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead at 2:20 a.m. Ridley was found hiding in a cabinet in a basement apartment. He scuffled briefly with officers, and a Taser was used to subdue him, police said.

Ridley faces a preliminary hearing Dec. 8. He also is scheduled for a preliminary hearing today for his halfway house escape. Prosecutors said he was scheduled for sentencing in the arson case in December.

Calling him a “great friend to gun owners and hunters in the Lone Star State,” the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Tuesday formally endorsed Democratic Rep. Nick Lampson (Texas), who is in a pitched battle to continue representing a solidly Republican district.

The endorsement from the powerful gun lobby — which has already blessed Lampson with an “A” voting record — could go a long way toward combating the attempts by Lampson’s Republican challenger, Pete Olson, to paint Lampson as a liberal.

The Olson campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Lampson is now at least the seventh House Democrat to win an endorsement from the Second Amendment protectionist lobby.

Unlike Iran, which has a largely cosmopolitan, educated populace but a crackpot government, Pakistan has a cosmopolitan, somewhat rational government, but a population with a high number of crackpots. With Musharaf's exit, the big question will be whether the government can keep a lid on the crazies. It is already failing to do so in the NW frontier.

Pakistanis resist global favorite Obama

LAHORE, Pakistan | Barack Obama may be winning in the U.S. and most global popularity polls, but he's a loser in Pakistan.

Dozens of students interviewed at two top universities in this country's second-largest city, a cultural melting pot known for its liberal leanings, rejected Mr. Obama as "too aggressive," "irresponsible" and an "enemy of Muslims" whose stated policy toward insurgency-plagued areas would make a bad situation worse.

The anti-Obama sentiment stems from assertions on the campaign trail that the senator from Illinois, if elected president, would authorize U.S. forces to enter Pakistani territory to hunt down Taliban and al Qaeda militants.

That the Democratic nominee is an overwhelming favorite abroad is not lost on the students, nor is the Muslim faith of his grandfather nor his Arabic middle name, Hussein.

But that is not enough to overcome concerns that an Obama administration would target and further destabilize Pakistan.

"The only country he's talking about bombing today is us," said Sher Afghen Malik, a political science major at the University of the Punjab, to the approving nods of classmates. "How could we possibly support him?"

Posters made by an Islamic student group have found their way onto campus walls, showing a map of Pakistan clutched by hairy, red-fanged claws wrapped in the American flag.

Khansa Qamar, a member of the school's model United Nations club, said her peers perceive Mr. Obama "as even more dangerous than George W. Bush" with regard to his stance on Pakistan.

By a show of hands, not one among two dozen students in one class supported the Democratic candidate. A little more than half said they prefer Sen. John McCain of Arizona because the Republican presidential candidate's statements on Pakistan have been less pointed.

Mr. Obama has stressed that he is not calling for an invasion of Pakistan, but restated in the second presidential debate on Oct. 7 that if its government is "unable or unwilling to hunt down [Osama] bin Laden and take him out, then we should."

Mr. Obama has distinguished himself from the Bush administration in words but not in deeds. Since mid-August, the U.S. has launched at least a dozen attacks on Pakistani soil, most by unmanned drones.

Still, the candidate's comments set Pakistan's media machine on spin cycle, hardening the views of many people who otherwise had been supportive of him, said Khalid Butt, a political science instructor at Government College in Lahore.

"This shows what a few misguided statements can do," he said.

Much of the rest of the world has a much more positive view of an Obama presidency.

A recent survey of 24 nations by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found high levels of interest in the U.S. election and widespread optimism that American foreign policy "will change for the better" under an Obama administration.

In all but three of the nations polled, participants said they had more faith in Mr. Obama than Mr. McCain to "do the right thing regarding world affairs."

But most Pakistanis surveyed said they made no distinction between the two candidates. Pakistanis and respondents from three other nations - Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan - collectively anticipated a turn for the worse no matter who wins the U.S. election. All four are large recipients of U.S. military and economic aid.

At a recent daylong seminar on the upcoming U.S. elections, one plucky young woman in a pink shalwar kameez peppered a visiting lecturer with sharp questions about America's "two-faced agenda of ostensible intentions and ulterior motives" that threatens to shatter its "friendship" with Pakistan.

"In my opinion, the word 'friendship' should not be used in international relations," replied the lecturer, Hafeez Malik of Villanova University in suburban Philadelphia. "In the end, a nation will always act in its best interests."

Student Muhammad Altaf said that most Pakistanis think policies are not forged by the U.S. president but by influential Cabinet officials or, in the case of Mr. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney.

"We have no concern for the candidates. We need the right policies," Mr. Altaf said, adding that he would support a president "whose policies support Pakistan."

Some here question whether Mr. Obama's comments on Pakistan are sincere or mere pre-election posturing to win votes and silence critics who argue that he is soft on foreign policy issues.

"I think he's just trying to make the right noises," said Tariq Ali, a student at the University of the Punjab.

"The equation might change once he's in office," said Aziz Numan. "He's not well briefed enough yet."

Another student was also cautiously optimistic.

Mr. Obama's grandfather "was still a Muslim," said Muhammad Akmal, "so we hope that means something for us."

Pawnshop Led Police To Suspect In Invasions

For 13 months, Montgomery County police tried to catch up with a man who was scaring the wits out of older residents in Chevy Chase, Bethesda and Potomac . The man broke into homes and -- according to new details revealed yesterday -- hogtied and gagged residents as old as 92. He pistol-whipped a 78-year-old, took items ranging from keepsakes to jewelry to bottles of liquor, and finally, in early September, killed one of the homeowners.

But for all of the detectives' hard work over those months, it was a lucky break that led them to a suspect.

On Oct. 7, the suspect, identified by police as Jose Garcia-Perlera, walked into Fred's Pawn Shop, a half-mile from his home in Hyattsville, and for $400 unloaded an Apple laptop computer that had been reported stolen, authorities said. The pawnshop owner reported the transaction, and police were soon searching Garcia-Perlera's home.

There they found items linked to the home invasions, including two "talking" wristwatches for the sight-impaired and a Mercury space mission medallion kept by homicide victim Mary Havenstein because her late husband was a "pioneering member" of the project, according to an affidavit signed by Detective Paula Hamill.

Garcia-Perlera was ordered held without bond yesterday by District Court Judge William G. Simmons. He is charged with numerous counts of robbery and theft and with first-degree murder in Havenstein's death.

Police have not released her exact cause of death, but two sources said yesterday that Havenstein was hit or beaten during the break-in; one source said she was not shot. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is open.

Court records indicated that Garcia-Perlera does not yet have an attorney. He is not a U.S. citizen and is wanted for deportation by federal immigration officials, according to the records.

Hamill's affidavit, made available in court records yesterday, indicates a trend of increasing violence in the crimes.

They began Sept. 17, 2007, when the burglar removed a pane from the rear basement window of a home on Maryknoll Avenue in Bethesda , the affidavit stated. Inside the home, police said, Garcia-Perlera stole the wristwatches and other items totaling about $2,450 in value.

Two months later, he broke through a basement window of a woman's home in Chevy Chase , stealing jewelry, keepsakes and other items valued at $800, according to Hamill's affidavit. During this attack, the victim told The Washington Post last week, she asked the assailant to loosen the clothesline around her arthritic knees, and he did so.

On Feb. 27, the assailant turned more violent, according to the affidavit. A 78-year-old woman on Picasso Lane in Potomac walked from her house to check an open storage area. Garcia-Perlera came out of the area, beat her with a silver revolver and forced her into her basement, according to the affidavit. The victim was found two days later when a relative went to check on her. She continues to suffer from a serious injury to at least one of her hands, a neighbor said.

The suspect left behind a black baseball cap, from which detectives extracted DNA that they later matched to DNA found at two of the other crime scenes. All three samples matched DNA taken from inside Garcia-Perlera's cheek after he was detained, police said.

On May 7, according to Hamill's affidavit, Garcia-Perlera broke into a couple's house in the Kenwood neighborhood. The assailant entered the bedroom wearing a scarflike garment over his face and military-style clothing. After hogtying the 70-year-old woman, he removed her rings, the affidavit said.

In late August came the laptop burglary.

On Aug. 28, police said, Garcia-Perlera walked into the unlocked front door of a home on Seven Locks Road . At the time, a woman -- younger than the previous victims -- was asleep in her room, the woman said in an interview yesterday. She spoke on condition of anonymity to protect her safety and privacy. Her son and two of his friends were in a sunroom listening to music. When their computer's battery went dead, one of the friends walked upstairs for a backup and discovered that the laptop was missing. In another room, jewelry was gone.

Investigators did not classify the burglary as one of the home invasions. The victims were younger, and no one was tied up or attacked. The woman in the home said she felt the same way, even when she went to a community meeting about the home invasions.

"I didn't link it at all," she said.

BALD CYPRESS DR.,10000 block, midnight to 2 a.m. Aug. 18. A man took a garage door opener from an unlocked vehicle parked on the street, opened the garage door and entered the residence. He took property and fled. Some of the property was found nearby.

CROYDON AVE.,200 block, 6:03 a.m. Aug. 24. A man tried to enter a residence by force but was interrupted when a resident saw him and called police. A homeless man, 18, was arrested nearby. He had a screwdriver in his pocket.

EDMONSTON DR. W,200 block, 3 a.m. Aug. 25. A man entered a residence, waking the homeowner's daughter when he entered her bedroom. She yelled, and the man ran out the front door but was caught and held until police arrived. A man, 19, of the 9000 block of Piney Branch Road was arrested.

HOLLYWOOD AVE.,900 block, 3:10 a.m. Aug. 24. A man with a machete entered a residence and went into a bedroom. The resident woke up and a struggle ensued, and the resident pushed the assailant out the door. A man, 20, of no fixed address was arrested.

THAYER AVE.,800 block, 3:10 a.m. Aug. 24. A man tried to enter a residence by breaking a front window and removing screens to talk to the homeowner. A Prince George 's man, 48, was arrested in the incident, which police said was domestic-related.

District 4 Wheaton Station

HARRIS AVE.,2800 block, 12:32 p.m. Aug. 22. Property was stolen from a residence entered by force.

Woman's Death Could Be Related to String of Attacks

Montgomery County detectives are investigating whether the death of a woman whose body was found in her Bethesda home this morning is linked to recent attacks in which elderly victims in affluent areas have been tied up and their homes burglarized.

Police said the woman was discovered by a relative in the 8900 block of Seven Locks Road , in a neighborhood just outside the Capital Beltway. Police did not release the woman's name but said she was in her 60s.

Her home appeared to have been burglarized, and her car is missing, police said. Police did not say how she died. The death has not been ruled a homicide but is considered suspicious, police said.

Since last September, detectives have investigated five other home invasion burglaries that appear to be related. None of the victims was critically injured in those incidents, and all were older than the woman found dead this morning. All were bound. One woman was shoved to the floor.

Montgomery police issued previous warnings that an assailant might be striking every several months. As the attacks continued, police said they were concerned that a future victim might be seriously hurt.

Victims in the previous assaults described the assailant as a Hispanic man, based in part on his accent, police have said. The victims described him as being of medium build and in his 20s.

In the first of the attacks, last September, a man broke a basement window at the home of a 92-year-old woman in the 7600 block of Maryknoll Avenue in Bethesda and disabled a circuit breaker. When the woman went downstairs to check, he tied her up and then ransacked her house, police said.

In November, a man pried off bars and crawled through a basement window of a home in Chevy Chase . The 77-year-old resident said the assailant tied her hands and legs with clothesline. She said she complained of the pain.

"That hurts my knee," she recalled saying. "I have arthritis."

The woman spoke in a previous interview but, in order to protect her privacy, insisted that she not be named.

The man loosened her bound legs, she said, and she was relieved that he didn't seem intent on hurting her. After the man went upstairs, she said, she was able to wriggle out of the clothesline. She said she acted as if she were still bound until he crawled back out through the window.

In January, a man tied up an 84-year-old man and an 85-year-old woman in a house on 49th Street NW in the District, in the Foxhall area.

The following month, a 78-year-old woman was confronted outside her home on Picasso Lane in Potomac and forced into her house by an assailant who took valuables, including her car, police said. She was discovered, still tied up, when her daughter went to check on her two days later. Police said she was taken to a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

In May, an armed man wearing military-style fatigues forced open the back door of a home on Brookside Drive in the Kenwood neighborhood, in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase area, police said. He crept into an elderly couple's bedroom, showed them a pistol and tied them up, fleeing about an hour later after taking valuables.

I was listening to NPR this morning when I heard the "conservative" commentator Juan Williams describe Troopergate as "Palin trying to get her brother in law fired after some sort of spat with Palin's sister."

Let's review the facts of WHY Palin's family wanted he guy fired:

Wyoming v U.S. concerned a Wyoming statute that allowed domestic violence abusers to regain their right to possess firearms by expunging misdemeanor abuse convictions, but only for purposes of getting a firearm. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) ruled that Wyoming could not expunge an abuser's record solely for purposes of getting a gun -- either the person is a danger or he poses no threat and can have his conviction completely expunged. Wyoming sued to overturn ATF's ruling. . . .

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.

Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee."

So we get:

If these guys win, we are DOOMED.

Let's not forget Biden's past:

Biden dropped out of the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination after a poor finish in the Iowa caucuses, but not before he talked dismissively of joining someone else's ticket.

"I am not running for vice president," he said in a Fox interview. "I would not accept it if anyone offered it to me. The fact of the matter is I'd rather stay as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee than be vice president."

He had stumbled on his first day in the race, apologizing for having described Obama as "clean." Months later, Obama spoke up on Biden's defense, praising him during a campaign debate for having worked for racial equality.

It was Biden's second try for the White House. The first ended badly in 1988 when he was caught lifting lines from a speech by British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock.

And that's not including Biden's "proud moment" of insulting American gun owners.

As a board-certified anesthesiologist, I can attest to the fact that the blunt trauma and internal injuries that a pedestrian, inline skater or, yes, bicyclist, would sustain in an accident with an automobile, even at urban crawl speeds, will be uniformly fatal, given the mismatch in the inertial mass of the two.

Why D.C. officials and the "urban cool" haven't studied this phenomenon or found it intuitively obvious is a mystery to me ["D.C. Bike Sharing Kicks Into High Gear," Metro Aug. 13]. A photo accompanying that article, showing Ellen Jones, transportation director for the Downtown Business Improvement District, riding in traffic and dwarfed by the sheer tonnage of the vehicles around her, should scream "death wish" to any rational individual. This is why the SmartBike DC program is such a bad idea.
