Brady Campaign tips hand (yet again)

Though no surprise to many, the Brady Campaign has explicitly endorsed the view that firearms should be banned for self defense.

Brady Campaign press release

Renowned Oscar-Winning Actress Makes Case For Common-Sense Gun Laws

For Immediate Release:

Contact Communications:
(202) 898-0792 Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence

New York, NY – Jodie Foster, winner of two Academy Awards and one of the most respected actresses in the world, says in the September issue of More magazine that she believes it makes common sense to place reasonable restrictions on access to firearms.

She told More Contributor Margy Rochlin “Isn’t it possible that we all have that bit of insanity in us? That’s why I’m for gun control. Absolutely. Hunting, I get that – let’s protect hunting. But I don’t believe that people should have access to life-or-death situations at any emotional time in their life. I don’t really believe that a human being who feels [things] should have the option at their fingertips.”

There you have it, the reason the Brady Crowd supports DC's "common sense" self-defense-firearms ban (though they duck and weave a direct answer to the question) - is that using a firearm in a life-or-death situation is "too emotional."

This must be the same reason they support the recently enacted SanFran self-defense firearm ban.

Yet another data point against them.

MoCO Home Invasion roundup (update 8/16/07)

I have been tracking the crime reports and noted something interesting. Unless a homeowner is actually confronted by an intruder, the incident is classified as a "theft/break-in" rather than a "robbery."

Two examples from this week:

WashPost

Crime Report

Thursday, August 16, 2007; GZ16

Dist. 1 (Rockville)
THEFTS/BREAK-INS

GRINNELL DR.,7300 block, 1:05 a.m. July 29. Property was stolen from a residence. A man was seen fleeing the area on foot.
. .. .
SERENITY LANE,5900 block, 2:50 a.m. July 30. A man forced his way into a residence, then fled in a gold Jeep Grand Cherokee. Nothing was reported missing.

But see from the same weekly report:

Dist. 3 (Silver Spring)

ROBBERIES

CARROLL AVE.,8700 block, 12:01 a.m. July 20. Two males were seen trying to break into a residence. Nothing was reported missing.

What is the difference between the three cases? Answer: none.

I don't know about you, but if someone comes into my house at 3AM "by force"," I consider that to be a home invasion, whether or not she/he demands that I hand over my wallet.

As such, anytime I see a "entered by force" report with pinpointed time during the 7pm to 8AM time frame I am coding it as a home invasion. "Pinpointed" means narrowing down the crime time to 15min period or less. I am doing this because I think there is a reasonable liklihood that someone called the cops at that time and the 911 records allow an accurate time of crime. Daytime burglaries seem to have a crime time of an 8 hour period, which is reasonably due to the victim leaving home for work and discovering the crime when they come home.

Here are others for this week:

Dist. 3 (Silver Spring)

ALPENHORN WAY, 13000 block, 5:30 p.m. July 19. Property was taken from a residence entered by force. Two male youths were seen leaving the scene.

MOUNT PISGAH RD.,9600 block, 4:20 a.m. July 23. A man was seen trying to break into a residence. Nothing was reported missing.

TUFA CT.,1800 block, 1:15 to 1:25 p.m. July 24. Property was stolen from a residence entered by force.

TURQUOISE TERR.,12700 block, 2 p.m. July 24. Property was stolen from a residence entered by force.
. . .

Dist. 6 (Gaithersburg)

CINNABAR TERR.,7400 block, 2:45 p.m. July 24. Property was stolen from a residence entered by force. Two males were seen leaving the scene.

SUMMIT AVE. N.,400 block, 4:30 a.m. July 24. Property was stolen from a residence.

Notice that the 8/11/07 home invasion and attempted rape on Lost Knife Circle was NOT included in this WashPost crime summary.

King gets Dist. 39 seat

Well, it looks like King is the winner. Ali almost won, but for some back room maneuvering by Mike Miller. I have to hand it to Ali: for a newcomer he sure is making a name for himself. Not knowing the guy, I am not sure what to think about all this beyond the 2A issues.

But the appearance of unbridled ambition brings to mind the ruthlessness of Hillary Clinton, Charles Schumer, or GWB.

Translation: Not good.

Latest big-time MoCo Home Invasion

By "big time" I mean reported in detail. My analysis of the crime reports shows that many more happen than are given press like this story. Weekly updates on the home invasion tally to follow now that I have a reliable source for the crime reports.

Here are the details of the latest shocker:

Brady Blog replacement

So, the news of the Brady Blog folding up is making the rounds. Up to fill the void is Bryan Miller's blog. Miller is the director of Ceasefire-NJ and -PA. Unlike Paul Helmke, Miller seems to like wrestling in the dirt with his commenters. He is also totally over the top with PSH. . . definitely the hardest of the hard-core anti-gun-owners. Since I can't link with mobile posting, you'll have to look it up on NJ.com.

Stuck

So the train is still stuck. Wife is mad - we are supposed to be at a restaurant in Phila where she is waiting right now. Like it's my fault the train is stopped because of the heat? Hmmm. .. . .Don't these things have a bar car around somewhere? . . . .

Mobile blogging

Thanks to the wonders of technology, I type this from Amtrak coach class somewhere between Philly and Bodymore. Woohoo!

Anyway, I find it interesting that Obama is imploding. Invade Pakistan? That's crazy talk, may-unn!

The MD Dist 39 thing is heating up big time. Ali is out swinging the bat in that social-climber way. King was out, then is now back in. What a circus.

Great, now we are stopped due to weather restrictions (Amtrak can't run at normal speed during excessive heat - something about the tracks). Gotta call my PA ride . . .
