Yet another broad daylight mass shooting in the gun control paradise that is Europe.

You gotta love the AP throwing in a gratuitous gun control editorial in the 'news' story. Bless their hearts.

A police official says one of the occupants was hit in the head and died soon after. The two other occupants have been hospitalized.

The official says the shooter fled and is being sought. He spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with police policy.

But I have yet to hear this guy labeled a "domestic terrist," or "lone wolf" or what have you. Total BS (and this from a self-described center-left guy).

Suspect shot as city mourns slain officer

By Seattle Times staff

While a massive memorial service for slain Officer Timothy Brenton neared its finish at KeyArena on Friday afternoon, fellow officers with the Seattle Police Department shot a man they believe to be responsible for Brenton's death.

The shooting occurred in Tukwila around 3 p.m., shortly before the memorial service concluded.

The suspect, 41, was shot in the head and taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to Interim Seattle Police Chief John Diaz. The man was upgraded from critical to serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said this morning.

Sources say the man is Christopher John Monfort — a man who has lived in Alaska, California and Washington, compiling an enigmatic history, described by some as reserved, others as outgoing. Monfort's past includes employment as a security guard.

He apparently has no felony history.

In recent years he has been a student — first at Highline Community College in Des Moines, then at the University of Washington, where he was enrolled in a program aimed at helping minority students go on to graduate work.

Law-enforcement sources said Monfort also is suspected of the Oct. 22 bombing and arson of a Seattle maintenance yard, where three police cars and an RV used as a mobile precinct were damaged.

Before Monfort was identified, police found distinct evidence that leads them to believe the same person was involved in that crime and the Brenton shooting, sources said.

A note threatening to kill police officers was left at the bombing site, according to sources. One source described the note as containing a general threat against police officers.

News reports at the time said fliers were left at the maintenance yard referring to an anti-police-brutality rally and citing the case of a King County sheriff's deputy accused of assaulting a teenage girl in a SeaTac holding cell.

Early Friday, Seattle and Tukwila police went to an apartment complex in the 13700 block of 56th Avenue South after receiving a tip about a car matching the description of the early 1980s Datsun 210 coupe seen near the site where Brenton was slain, said a source close to the investigation.

Police found a Datsun, draped with a car cover. They waited until a man approached the vehicle, said Tukwila police spokesman Mike Murphy.

King County sheriff's Sgt. John Urquhart said three detectives confronted the man in the complex's parking lot and asked to speak with him. The man ran away, bolting up an exterior staircase where he turned, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officers.

"For some reason, it didn't go off," said Urquhart.

The man then turned and ran again, with the detectives in close pursuit.

"They caught up to him after a relatively short distance, whereupon this individual turned again, presented the gun and was shot by the detectives," Urquhart said.

Police have since detained two other men, one at a bus stop near the apartment complex and another in Federal Way. The men may have ties to the wounded man and the apartment, a source said.

Monfort recently had been laid off from his job as a security guard, according to a source.

A Ford Crown Victoria sedan, a car often used as a police cruiser, was found parked near the covered Datsun. Investigators are looking into whether Monfort owned that car as well.

The person who tipped police to the Datsun said the man only recently had covered it and had been acting bizarrely, according to a law enforcement source.

UW graduate

Monfort received a bachelor's degree from the UW in March 2008, according to the university's degree-validation Web site. His major was in Law, Societies and Justice.

Last year, Monfort belonged to the McNair Scholars Program, part of the university's office of Minority Affairs and Diversity. The program aims to steep undergraduate students in sophisticated research, preparing them for graduate work.

Monfort provided this title for his project with the McNair program: "The Power of Citizenship Your Government Doesn't Want You to Know About: How to Change the Inequity of the Criminal Justice System Immediately, Through Active Citizen Nullification of Laws, As a Juror."

In an abstract of his project, Monfort said he planned to "illuminate and further" the scholarship of Paul Butler, a law professor at George Washington University. Butler is a proponent of jury nullification, a controversial principle whereby jurors feel free to disregard a judge's instructions and acquit a defendant no matter the strength of the evidence.

Butler has argued that such nullification may be particularly appropriate in cases where black defendants are charged with nonviolent crimes.

"It is the moral responsibility of black jurors to emancipate some guilty black outlaws," Butler wrote in a 1995 Yale Law Journal article, adding: "My goal is the subversion of American criminal justice, at least as it now exists."

In a McNair program newsletter, Monfort said he had previously been a student at Highline Community College, where he was "inspired" by Garry Wegner, who was the school's program coordinator for the Administration of Justice program.

Wegner said Friday that Monfort fared poorly the first time he attended the college. But he later returned to the Des Moines school and "caught fire academically."

"He did very, very well interacting with the other students in my class," said Wegner, who spent 20 years as the deputy director of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, the organization that trains many of the state's law enforcement officers.

"He always seemed to be a natural leader, and people would gravitate to him. He put in a lot of work and did well academically. He said it was because he finally found something that interested him — the field of criminal justice."

"Mature, stable"

Wegner, who described Monfort as "a mature, stable individual," said he was shocked to hear that his former student is the suspect in Brenton's slaying.

"You've shaken me to my toes," he told a Times reporter. "He's one of those people you thought would make a difference, a positive, constructive difference."

Monfort planned eventually to attend law school, Wegner said.

"I think he thought it was a position for anyone who wanted to be a catalyst for change," Wegner said.

During his last year at Highline, Monfort became involved in student government and was elected vice president of legislation, Wegner said.

The Oct. 23, 2003, edition of a Highline publication, The Thunderword, describes how Monfort ran for the school's student senate and spoke at a candidates' forum.

"Too often, too many of us walk around with our head in the clouds," Monfort said at the forum, according to the article.

The article said Monfort "believes he is unique, because he is upset about our current state of government and actually wants to do something about it. ... The student body has been cheated and lied to by the Bush Administration, said Monfort. He plans on putting together a petition to bring our soldiers home."

The article quoted Monfort saying: "Our freedom is under attack."

After Monfort left Highline, he stayed in touch with Wegner. The two men last spoke five or six months ago. At the time, Monfort was "driving truck" and volunteering at the Youth Services Center, teaching incarcerated youth about the criminal justice system.

"He was volunteering his Fridays down at juvy hall, trying to get kids on the straight and narrow," Wegner said. "He wanted to try and get them out of the system before they became adults."

"I don't get this"

Vicki Malone is a business partner of Monfort's mother, Suzan, who operates a Curves fitness center in Bethel, Alaska. "I know Chris very well and this just doesn't sound like him," Malone said. "They need to sort this out and figure out if he had anything to do with it. Chris is half black. And I don't know what happened here. But it sounds like people were running all over the place. I just really wonder if this was not a huge mistake.

"You don't see people that commit real violent crimes that have never been caught for anything."

She said Monfort was always worried about being targeted because of his race. "He was careful, he believed it was possible, so if he turned and ran that was easily what it was."

She said as a longtime family friend she was mystified that Monfort could be considered a suspect.

"I don't get this. People that run around and kill cops have tons and tons of other stuff in their record, and Chris had no gang stuff, I know that."

She said Monfort was an only child and had not married. She did not know anything about his father. "That was a long time ago."

She said she has given the news of the shooting to Monfort's mother, who was headed to Seattle. "She needs to find out if he is dead or alive. This was her only child."

Monfort also spent time in California in the late 1990s. Rosemary Stevens, of Pasadena, said she rented a room to Monfort in 1991-92.

"I didn't know him well," she said. "He was not outgoing."

Stevens remembered that Monfort worked as a waiter at a restaurant called Charlie Brown's, but said he wanted to be a police officer and owned a motorcycle.

During the year Monfort lived with her, Stevens said, he never had any visitors.

Family hopeful

Many officers attending the memorial service for Brenton at KeyArena on Friday left upon getting word of the shooting, some rushing to Tukwila.

Diaz, who was still at KeyArena, said he had briefed Brenton's family about the shooting. He described them as "hopeful."

An 83-year-old neighbor of Monfort's described the apartment complex as quiet and home to many low-income residents.

Police had been looking for the Datsun 210 coupe, which had driven by Brenton and Officer Britt Sweeney's patrol car at 9:46 p.m. Saturday while they were on a traffic stop. An image of the vehicle was captured by the cruiser's dash camera.

Twenty minutes later, while the officers were parked at 29th Avenue and East Yesler Way, a car drove alongside and unleashed a fusillade of rifle fire into the patrol car. Brenton was killed instantly and Sweeney, who sensed danger and ducked, was grazed.

Staff reporters Mike Carter, Jennifer Sullivan, Steve Miletich, Sara Jean Green, Lynda V. Mapes, Sanjay Bhatt, Nancy Bartley, Charles E. Brown and Ken Armstrong and news researchers David Turim and Gene Balk contributed to this report.

3rd heist proves fatal to gunman in W. Oak Lane

By STEPHANIE FARR
Philadelphia Daily News

James Sullivan committed two robberies late Saturday night, but he didn't survive committing a third, according to police.

Armed with a gun, Sullivan, 24, robbed one man and then another as they separately exited a house on 15th Street near Chelten Avenue in West Oak Lane, Sgt. Ray Evers, police spokesman, said.

Sullivan also held up at gunpoint a third man who had exited his car after having driven to that location with plans to pick up the two victims, both of whom fled on foot after being robbed, police said.

What Sullivan didn't know was that his third victim was armed.

That man, who had a legally-owned gun with a permit to carry a concealed weapon, shot Sullivan - of Wissahickon Avenue near Manheim Street in Germantown - multiple times, Evers said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after midnight.

The District Attorney's Office is looking at the case, but the armed victim who shot Sullivan is not expected to be charged with any crimes, police said.

All three robbery victims escaped without injury, according to Evers.

NYC = POLICE STATE

You can forget about me ever moving back to that hell hole. Analysis after the jump.

Police stop more than 1 million people on street
By COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press Writer Colleen Long, Associated Press Writer Thu Oct 8, 7:32 pm ET

NEW YORK – A teenager trying to get into his apartment after school is confronted by police. A man leaving his workplace chooses a different route back home to avoid officers who roam a particular street.

These and hundreds of thousands of other Americans in big cities have been stopped on the street by police using a law-enforcement practice called stop-and-frisk that alarms civil libertarians but is credited by authorities with helping reduce crime.

Police in major U.S. cities stop and question more than a million people each year — a sharply higher number than just a few years ago. Most are black and Hispanic men. Many are frisked, and nearly all are innocent of any crime, according to figures gathered by The Associated Press.

And the numbers are rising at the same time crime rates are dropping.

Ronnie Carr's experience was typical: He was fumbling with his apartment door after school in Brooklyn when plainclothes officers flashed their badges.

"What are you doing here?" one asked, as they rifled through his backpack and then his pockets. The black teenager stood there, quiet and nervous, and waited.

Carr said the officers told him they stopped him because he looked suspicious peeking in the windows. He explained that he had lost his keys. Twenty minutes later, the officers left. Carr was not arrested or cited with any offense.

"I felt bad, like I did something wrong," he said.

Civil liberties groups say the practice is racist and fails to deter crime. Police departments maintain it is a necessary tool that turns up illegal weapons and drugs and prevents more serious crime.

Police records indicate that officers are drawn to suspicious behavior: furtive movements, actions that indicate someone may be serving as a lookout, anything that suggests a drug deal, or a person carrying burglary tools such as a slim jim or pry bar.

The New York Police Department is among the most vocal defenders of the practice. Commissioner Raymond Kelly said recently that officers may stop as many as 600,000 people this year. About 10 percent are arrested.

"This is a proven law enforcement tactic to fight and deter crime, one that is authorized by criminal procedure law," he said.

The practice is perfectly legal. A 1968 Supreme Court decision established the benchmark of "reasonable suspicion" — a standard that is lower than the "probable cause" needed to justify an arrest.

But in the mid-1990s, then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani and NYPD Commissioner William Bratton made stop-and-frisk an integral part of the city's law enforcement, relying on the "broken windows" theory that targeting low-level offenses helps prevent bigger ones.

Street stops started to go up, and overall crime dropped dramatically in a once-dangerous city.

Last year, New York police stopped 531,159 people, more than five times the number in 2002. Fifty-one percent of those stopped were black, 32 percent Hispanic and 11 percent white.

Not all stops are the same. Some people are just stopped and questioned. Others have their bag or backpack searched. And sometimes police conduct a full pat-down.

David Harris, a law professor at the University of Pittsburgh and an expert on street stops, said few searches yield weapons or drugs. And the more people are searched, the more innocent people are hassled.

"The hit rate goes down because you're being less selective about how you're doing this. That has a cost. It's not free," Harris said.

When officers make a stop, they are required to fill out a form, including the time and location of the stop and why police were suspicious. Age, race and whether the person was frisked are also recorded.

In Philadelphia, stops nearly doubled to more than 200,000 from 2007 to 2008. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter deployed an "aggressive" stop-and-frisk policy in the year since his election in November 2007 and overall crime has dropped.

In Los Angeles, where Bratton recently stepped down as police commissioner, pedestrian stops have doubled in the past six years to 244,038 in 2008. The number of people stopped in cars is higher.

About 15 percent of the stops resulted in arrests in 2002, compared with about 30 percent in 2008, according to an analysis of the data by Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.

Several other major police departments do not keep street-stop statistics or do not release them. Chicago police refused to release numbers to the AP. Boston police say they do not keep the records. The New Orleans department is not required to keep statistics on race and pedestrian stops.

RAND, an independent research agency hired by the New York Police Department to analyze street-stop data in 2007 after public outcry, found little racial profiling. It said the raw statistics "distorted the magnitude and, at times, the existence of racially biased policing."

The NYPD continues to monitor the issue, but after the RAND analysis, officials agreed that large-scale restructuring was unnecessary.

Kelly has warned against more simplistic data reviews.

"There are 8.4 million people in New York City. That number swells to more than 10 million every work day. Police are responsible for more than 800,000 summonses and arrests annually based on the higher standard of probable cause," Kelly said.

"Under the circumstances, it's not surprising that we make 500,000 or even 600,000 stops based on the less stringent standard of reasonable suspicion."

Civil liberties groups also complain because New York police keep a database of everyone stopped — innocent or not. That makes them targets for future investigations, said Christopher Dunn, associate legal director of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Los Angeles was forced by federal mandate to release data on street stops — including the race of those stopped — starting in 2000 after a series of scandals. The city government promised to adopt scores of reform measures under federal court supervision.

The LAPD was released from the federal decree in July, but a report last year by the ACLU in Southern California showed that blacks were still nearly three times more likely to be stopped by police than whites.

"The initial defense was: 'Because we're over-policing higher crime neighborhoods, they're predominantly populated by people of color, and that's why,'" said Peter Bibring, an ACLU attorney in Los Angeles.

But an analysis done for the ACLU in 2008 by Yale law professor Ian Ayres accounts for differences in crime rates and still shows minorities are stopped much more.

Some people who are stopped file lawsuits against the city and speak out publicly. Most just accept it.

In Harlem, George Lucas changed his route home from work to avoid a stretch of Seventh Avenue, because he kept being stopped by the police.

"The inconvenience of walking out of my way still saves me the worry and frustration about being stopped," said Lucas, 28, director of a nonprofit.

It's so common in some areas that community groups have begun offering classes on how to behave when stopped.

Courtney Bennett of the nonprofit New York City Mission Society says he regularly hosts groups of 30 men, of all ages, who feel powerless because they are stopped routinely for what they say is no reason. Carr recently attended a similar meeting for teens at another nonprofit called The Door.

Bennett is also a member of the Order of the Feather, a black fraternity that mentors young men and promotes community service. At a recent initiation ceremony in Harlem, it did not take long to find dozens of people who said they were stopped by police.

"You see these guys? They're normal guys, you know? Regular dudes," said Paul Hawkins, 22. "They've all been affected by it somehow. They were stopped, or someone they knew, or their dad or whatever. And they're not, you know, criminals."

NYC population = 8.4M

Assuming 550,000 NYC "stop and frisks" per year as a good average.

10% of those stop-and-frisks get arrested = 55,000 arrests/495,000 no arrests

Assuming 800,000 NYC arrests per year total (including those 55000 stop-and-frisk arrests).

You wind up with:
495,000 stop and frisks with no arrest
+ 800,000 total arrests
= 1,295,000 police "contacts" per year in NYC.

That means that one in seven NYC residents is either stopped and frisked by the police or outright arrested or charged for some crime or other.

One in TEN is arrested or charged with a crime.

Or, one out of 17 NYC residents is stopped on the street and frisked/searched/interrogated without being charged with any crime and their info is put into a police database.

Let that sink in for a moment.

AU:Guns Hold Sydney Hostage

How's that gun control working out?

Guns hold Sydney hostage

* Exclusive by Gemma Jones, Political Reporter
* From: The Daily Telegraph

GUN violence is so out of control there are three shootings a week in Sydney and neighbourhoods are living in fear.

The city's shooting capital is Fairfield, with 34 shootings and drive-bys in just two years to the end of June.

Exclusive statistics from the Bureau of Crime Statistics show there were 157 drive-by and illegal shootings between July 2008 and the end of June, up from 129 the year before.

Police investigated 29 shootings in the Blacktown local government area, 25 in Bankstown, 24 in Auburn and 20 in Liverpool. There were even 11 shootings in the heart of the city.

Opposition police spokesman Mike Gallacher said NSW was awash with handguns, which were being imported from overseas and then traded on Sydney streets.

"Criminals are getting their hands on illegally imported firearms," he said last night.

A frightening array of guns have been seized in the past month, including a .357 Magnum handgun and a .22 shortened rifle with silencer.

In one raid on September 9, police officers managed to seize five Colt M16 assault rifles, three Colt AR15 assault rifles, three 9mm assault rifles, a tactical assault rifle and seven 9mm handguns at Rosebery.

The last shooting victim was a 34-year-old Auburn man wounded in the shoulder six days ago in Sydney.

Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research chief Don Weatherburn blamed the spike in shootings on a sudden rise in bikie-related drive-bys towards the end of late last year.

He added that the number of shootings had since stabilised.

The latest drive-by shooting was just two weeks ago at Smithfield, with a family at home when their house was shot at.

Truck driver Bob Knight was an innocent victim caught in the crossfire in June when shot dead by a stray bullet from a gunfight that took place in Milperra.

"I actually feel sorry for people that live in Sydney, people that lived near it wrote to us saying `It could have been my house'," Mr Knight's son David said yesterday.

"I like to hope if something comes out of this for Dad that the Government or the police actually realise what is going on."

Early yesterday morning, she said, a 16-year-old boy climbed into her parents' Drexel Hill home through the bay window and stood over her with a revolver in his hand. He told her to lie on her stomach.

Tomosky, 23, who is seven months pregnant, got on top of her 5-year-old daughter, hoping that her body would stop the bullet.

"I thought there was a good chance he was going to kill me," she said.

The teenage gunman, identified by Upper Darby police as Nasir Cameron, didn't pull the trigger. He just wanted the family's flat-screen TV and all the cash in the house, police said.

But Cameron and two alleged accomplices didn't get far. They were arrested following a foot pursuit after Tomosky used a cordless phone to call 9-1-1, and her sister ran to a neighbor's house for help while the home invasion was still under way.

Police said that Cameron was being charged as an adult with robbery, assault and related offenses, along with John Wade and Keith Morris, both 22. Police said they broke into the Marshall Road home about 3 a.m., armed with a sawed-off shotgun, a handgun and a knife.

All three are from Philadelphia.

"These guys are like pack rats running around in a maze, looking to see who they can rip off, who they can hurt," said Upper Darby police Superintendent Michael Chitwood Sr. "These guys are dangerous, violent individuals."

Morris has also been charged in Monday's home invasion on Kirks Lane, where he and three other men allegedly terrorized an 88-year-old man and 77-year-old woman and stole their BMW.

"Apparently, what these guys are doing is patrolling the areas," Chitwood said. "They're looking to see who's got lights on early in the morning; they're staking out the houses to see the movement inside."

Police believe that one or more of the men might be responsible for a series of home invasions in Delaware County and Northeast Philadelphia. Police were planning to search several Philadelphia locations late yesterday.

Tomosky couldn't believe how young Cameron was when, she said, he woke her up and demanded money.

"He looked like a baby, a little freakin' kid," she said. "It's pretty traumatizing. My 5-year-old was looking down the barrel of a gun."

"You never think it's going to happen to you," said Tomosky's fiance, John Blake, "until it does."

A telling admission by the MoCO PD that it intentionally downgrades "hot burglaries" out of the "home invasion" category unless certain narrow circumstances are present. One must wonder who told them to do that????

Once again, this validates my classifying "police-identified burglaries" as suspected "home invasions" if there are (1) pinpointed offense times or (2) they take place during peak "at home" hours.

Man injured confronting burglars in his home
Police say investigation continues
by Terri Hogan | Staff Writer

While the injuries Mike Bonhag sustained during a confrontation with five men who broke into his Olney Mill home have healed, his anger remains.

Bonhag, 47, was awakened at 12:45 a.m. Aug. 3 by three loud booms coming from downstairs.

Because all the lights were out, he knew his wife and three children were asleep. As he turned the corner and flipped on the light in the family room, he saw five men who had entered through a shattered sliding-glass door.

"I yelled and they scrambled to get out, but I grabbed the last one," he said. "I wanted to hold on to him until the police got there, but the other four guys came back and started to kick and punch me, and he squirmed out of his shirt."

Bonhag suffered cuts on his feet from the broken glass and needed stitches in his right hand and staples in his head. He also suffered minor cuts on the right side of his face.

"They seemed scared," he said of the burglars. "When they saw me they were knocking each other down trying to get out the door."

Police were able to get partial fingerprints and sent the T-shirt to a laboratory to check the DNA.

Montgomery County Police crime analyst John Desoulis said police are still investigating and awaiting lab results.

"That's a slow process and there is a big backlog," he said. "Unfortunately, burglaries are down pretty far on the list."

Bonhag, who grew up in Ashton, has lived in the house on Falling Green Road for 19 years and said has never had any trouble before this incident.

"We had our five cars plus a company car in the driveway, so I am still baffled why someone would try to break in," he said. "We had just got back from vacation, so maybe they had noticed that the lights had been out all week."

Bonhag's home backs up to Olney Mill Park and is not particularly isolated.

In talking to neighbors, Bonhag said he learned of another recent incident on a nearby street where burglars entered through a sliding-glass door, but no one was home at the time.

Desoulis confirmed that there were two other incidents in Olney that same weekend where burglars entered homes through sliding-glass doors. In one case the homeowners were home and in the other no one was home.

Those incidents, however, were not in Olney Mill, he said.

"One was in the southwest quadrant of Olney and the other was in the southeast quadrant, so they're all pretty spread out," Desoulis said.

That news is unsettling to some area residents, including Bonhag.

"It's just disturbing, because Olney Mill is a nice neighborhood," he said.

Since the incident, Bonhag now leaves outdoor lights on at night and has installed motion detector lights.

Although the police classified the incident as a burglary, Bonhag said he considers it a home invasion.

"They came in while we were home and invaded our house and our property," he said.

Desoulis said the police consider a home invasion to be a robbery when the intruders force their way in past the homeowners and usually tie them up and rob them.

"In this case, the suspects were on their way out when the homeowner tried to detain them," he said. "If he had not done that, it would be a straight-up burglary."

Regardless of the label, Desoulis said police still consider it a serious crime.

He advises homeowners to secure their doors and not to detain a burglar if faced with a similar situation.

"These suspects were trying to get away, so we don't think their plan was to confront someone," he said. "No property was taken."

Bonhag said that he would react the same way if faced with the situation again.

"I would absolutely go after them again," he said. "They had no business being there."

Sheriff: Ga. couple likely killed in dog attack

By KATE BRUMBACK (AP) – 14 hours ago

ATLANTA — A former college professor and his wife were apparently attacked and killed by nearly a dozen dogs along a rural northeast Georgia road where their bodies were found mutilated, authorities said Monday.

Preliminary autopsy results from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation showed Sherry Schweder, 65, likely died of injuries from a dog attack, Oglethorpe County Sheriff Mike Smith said. Autopsy results for her husband, Lothar Karl Schweder, 77, were not yet available, but Smith said it's likely he was also attacked by dogs because the scene was so grisly.

Smith said officials were going to round up at least 11 dogs seen in the area where the couple's bodies were found Saturday morning by five passers-by.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the mixed-breed dogs were feral or someone's pets. There had been no recent complaints about vicious dogs in the area, Smith said.

Stephanie Shain, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society of the United States, said it was "uncommon" for people to be bitten to death by dogs, citing federal figures that the average number of fatal dog bites each year is 16.

The bodies were found along a dirt road near the couple's home in Lexington and had been there for at least 24 hours before they were found, said Madison County Coroner James Mathews.

A family friend told the Athens Banner-Herald that Lothar Karl Schweder was a retired professor who had taught German at the University of Georgia, which is about 20 miles away in Athens. German Department head Martin Kagel said it might be possible he worked there part time or more than 20 years ago.

Sherry Schweder was a bibliographer at the university's library, where she had worked since 1974, selecting books and journals for the school's humanities collection, said librarian William Potter.

"She was one of my favorite colleagues here," said Nan McMurry, Sherry Schweder's supervisor who had worked with her for about 20 years. "She was really a kind of quiet and self-effacing person, but she was one of the most intelligent and most well-educated people here."

McMurry said Sherry Schweder had many dogs and cats, though authorities don't think her own animals attacked her.

York Schweder, one of the couple's two sons, had left for Georgia after hearing about his parents' death, said his mother-in-law, Toni Mora, who answered the phone at his home in Hutchinson, Kan. York Schweder did not immediately return a message left Monday on his cell phone.

Police shocked by mass murder in Australia

Melbourne - Five people, including two children, were found bludgeoned to death in a Sydney home in a "horrific" mass murder with no apparent motive,

Australian police said on Sunday.

Police said the victims, discovered Saturday in the Sydney suburb of North Epping, were believed to be four family members and a female relative.

"The injuries of all five people are quite definitely horrific," Superintendent Geoff Beresford told Sky News.

"They're all blunt trauma injuries to the upper body and to the heads of all the victims, which regrettably makes visual identification very difficult.

"It was an extremely violent attack carried out, I guess, with some precision."

Police said the bodies were believed to be a 45-year-old man and his wife, 43, their sons, aged 12 and nine, and the woman's 39-year-old sister.

They refused to identify the dead but media reports said two of the victims were Chinese-born Min Lin, his wife Yun Li Lin.

The deaths were initially thought to be murder-suicide, possibly linked to a domestic dispute, but Beresford on Sunday ruled out that possibility and admitted police were struggling to find a motive for the killings.

"It certainly is not a murder-suicide, it is simply, regrettably, the murder of five innocent people," he said.

"The motive is unclear at this stage, it certainly doesn't bear the hallmarks of what you might call a traditional home invasion. Robbery does not seem to be the motive (but) we haven't ruled it out."

Media reports said that the eldest male victim had witnessed an armed robbery near his news agency last May which netted 1.2 million dollars.

Beresford said police did not believe the two crimes were linked although all avenues were being investigated.

He said a female member of the family was due to return to Australia from overseas Sunday and police would seek her help in the search for a motive.

Neighbour Pamela Burgess described the family as "normal".

"They're a family of five, their kids went to the local school," she told national news agency AAP.

"They were very nice, they were normal."

A police task force has been set up to investigate the murders and detectives appealed to anyone with information to contact them. - AFP

'Curry bashings' strain Australia-India relations

by Neil Sands Neil Sands Sun May 31, 7:46 am ET

MELBOURNE (AFP) – Indian students rallied in Melbourne on Sunday as Australia scrambled to contain outrage over a wave of attacks that has seen it labelled racist and strained diplomatic relations with New Delhi.

What began as a local policing issue in Australia's second largest city has spiralled into a crisis that prompted talks between Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on student safety last week.

Students and Indian officials are demanding action after more than 70 assaults on their peers in a year in Melbourne, including at least four in the past fortnight, attracting prominent coverage in newspapers here and in India.

Pictures from a hospital bed of a comatose Sravan Kumar Theerthala, who was stabbed with a screwdriver by gatecrashers at a party, were splashed across front pages in India. A teenager faces charges of attempted murder.

"They were saying, 'Don't touch us you Indians' and 'Indians go home' before they got the screwdriver," said Theerthala's friend, Jayasanka Bagpelli.

Another student, Baljinder Singh, told last week how his attackers laughed as he pleaded with them during a robbery at a Melbourne train station.

"I was saying to them, 'I'm giving you all my money, don't kill me, don't kill me'," said Singh, who was stabbed and left with a six-inch (15-centimetre) wound to his stomach and has advised Indians to stay away from Australia.

Indian media have dubbed the attacks "curry bashings", a term reportedly used by youths behind the violence in Melbourne's western suburbs, where 30 percent of assault victims are Indian.

It is a grossly disproportionate figure in a city of almost four million with an Indian student population of less than 50,000.

Police deny any racial element to the attacks, arguing Indian students were often simply in the wrong place at the wrong time as they travelled home late with items such as mobile phones and MP3 players.

But Indian High Commissioner to Australia Sujatha Singh said racism was playing a part, even if some of the crimes were "opportunistic".

Federation of Indian Students president Amit Menghani, who led the rally of more than 1,000 supporters through central Melbourne Sunday, said the police attitude had frustrated students.

Bagpelli, who attended the rally, added: "It's only because the Indian government is now applying pressure that they are doing anything."

While the attacks are unlikely to result in any permanent damage at a diplomatic level, Canberra is concerned parents in India may prevent their children studying in Australia.

That would threaten the international education sector here, a 15.5 billion dollar (12.2 billion US) a year industry that has attracted more than 90,000 Indians nationwide.

More broadly, with headlines such as "Australia, land of racism" running in overseas media, there are also fears Australia's reputation for tolerance is sustaining long-term damage.

"We need to help make sure that the mothers and fathers of all students who come here are assured that Australia is a safe location to come to, that our general crime rates and violence rates are very low," Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told commercial television Sunday.

There are already signs the controversy is souring popular attitudes in India towards Australia, with Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan threatening to snub the offer of an honorary doctorate from an Australian university.

"My conscience is profoundly unsettled at the moment," Bachchan said on his blog, in which he also reported an "overwhelming" response from the Indian public over the issue.

Theerthala's assault proved the catalyst for widespread anger in India, sparking a flurry of high-level diplomatic activity and strong public statements from Indian officials indicating they had run out of patience.

"Such attacks cannot be allowed to happen," High Commissioner Singh said.

At least 11 wounded in fight in Vienna temple

The Associated Press

VIENNA - Worshippers of Indian origin armed with knives and at least one gun fought one another in a temple in the Austrian capital on Sunday, and at least 11 were wounded, police and ambulance staff said.

Police spokesman Michael Takacs said the brawl occurred in Sikh temple, but Mohnder Ram, a worshipper who said he had attended services there for decades, said Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and others regularly attend the Shri Guru Ravidass Temple. He said the attackers were Sikhs from a temple in another Vienna district.

Witnesses said the fighting erupted between worshippers in a dispute over the sermon.

Police said at least six men, one wielding a gun and the others knives, attacked the preacher. Other worshippers rushed to his aid, resulting in the melee.

Police spokesman Michael Takacs said all six attackers were in critical condition, while the wounds of the others were less serious. More people may have been slightly hurt and run out of the temple before police arrived, he said. Takacs said he did not know the motive of the brawl. He identified the temple as Sikh.

Ram, 72, said, "I heard four to five shots" in the temple. "People started screaming, children were crying as they ran out. It was like war. There was lots of blood everywhere."

Ram said the preacher, whom he said was Hindu, was among those shot.

An unidentified witness cited by the Austria Press Agency said the brawl was started by fundamentalist Sikhs from a higher caste, who accused the guru of being disrespectful with the Holy Book.

All the wounded were men of Indian origin and estimated between 30 and 50 years old, spokesman Bernhard Segal of Vienna medical services said.

Ram said about 400 people were at the service when the fight broke out in the temple, in a residential building of the working-class Viennese neighborhood.

Four ambulances and three medical helicopters transported the victims to hospitals.

The temple is situated in Vienna-Rudolfsheim, the capital's 15th district near Westbahnhof, one of Vienna's main train stations. Police cordoned off the area.

NZ police retrieve officer's body; siege continues

RAY LILLEY

The Associated Press

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand police opened fire from armored personnel carriers Friday so they could retrieve the body of a colleague killed outside a house by a gunman who has held authorities at bay for more than 30 hours.

The siege closed down a section of the city of Napier for most of Thursday and all of Friday, with no immediate end in sight.

Armed police have surrounded the house where former army reservist Jan Molenaar, 51, fired a fusillade of shots from an automatic rifle at police who arrived early Thursday with a warrant to search the house for cannabis.

One officer was shot dead and two others seriously wounded, along with a bystander.

Volleys of gunfire over the past day had stymied police attempts to retrieve the body and rescue a police dog trapped in a nearby van, Superintendent Sam Hoyle said.

At dusk Friday, two light armored vehicles drove toward the house, with armed police crouching behind them for cover, an eyewitness told National Radio.

"There were some shots fired from the house , it's dark now and we could see the flash," said the eyewitness, who was identified only as Brody. "They returned fire from the guns on the tanks."

Less than half an hour later, one of the vehicles returned to the police base with the body of the dead officer.

"We are pleased for the family that we are able to bring him out , it has been a traumatic and immensely difficult time for them," Hoyle said.

Hoyle has said police prefer to wait out the gunman rather than storm the house.

Intermittent negotiations with the gunman have been tense, and the suspect fired on police outside the house in the suburb of Hospital Hill "dozens of times" overnight Thursday, Hoyle said.

"We are dealing with a very complex character and, as you might expect in negotiations going on for this amount of time, he goes through various mood swings," he told reporters.

More than 500 residents of the port city remained cut off from their homes by the standoff, and local businesses and three nearby schools remained closed.

The two wounded police officers and the civilian , who was shot as he wrestled with Molenaar during Thursday's melee , remained in critical condition in a hospital.

New Zealand, a South Pacific nation of 4 million people famous worldwide for its stunning wilderness and idyllic lifestyle, is among few countries in the world where police routinely do not carry guns. The officer shot dead was the 29th killed on duty in New Zealand since 1890.

Moscow policeman opens fire in public, kills 3

DAVID NOWAK

The Associated Press

MOSCOW - A Moscow district police chief opened fire on the street and in a supermarket early Monday, killing three people and wounding seven others , four of them critically, Russian investigators said.

Police Maj. Denis Yevsyukov, who heads a southern Moscow police department, opened fire just after midnight and was detained after killing a driver, a supermarket cashier and customer, federal investigators said in a statement.

Yevsyukov, whose wife had recently left him, finished his late shift Sunday and hitched a ride to the supermarket, Moscow police chief Vladimir Pronin told Russian television. Yevsyukov was in civilian clothes, with one part of his uniform slung around his shoulders, Pronin said.

Yevsyukov shot the driver of the car with a gun that Russian news agencies reported was unlicensed. Yevsyukov then entered a supermarket and killed a cashier and customer before shooting at least seven others, authorities said.

Details of those killed were unavailable, but Russian news agency Interfax reported that four people were hospitalized with head injuries and they were aged between 19 and 23.

Russian television network NTV reported that supermarket employees activated a silent alarm to alert police as the shooting progressed. Yevsyukov shot and missed at an officer who managed to disarm and detain him, NTV said.

"He killed the cashier, we know for sure, and then there were more shots, three shots inside the store," a young, unnamed female witness told NTV. "Then a shop assistant came running up to us and asked: 'What are you doing here? There is a killer here and you should run away,'" the witness said.

College Student Shoots, Kills Home Invader

Posted: 4:53 pm EDT May 4, 2009Updated: 9:09 am EDT May 7, 2009
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- A group of college students said they are lucky to be alive and they’re thanking the quick-thinking of one of their own. Police said a fellow student shot and killed one of two masked me who burst into an apartment.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones met with one of the students to talk about the incident.

“Apparently, his intent was to rape and murder us all,” said student Charles Bailey.

TOM JONES: College Student Shoots, Kills Home Invader

Bailey said he thought it was the end of his life and the lives of the 10 people inside his apartment for a birthday party after two masked men with guns burst in through a patio door.

“They just came in and separated the men from the women and said, ‘Give me your wallets and cell phones,’” said George Williams of the College Park Police Department.

Bailey said the gunmen started counting bullets. “The other guy asked how many (bullets) he had. He said he had enough,” said Bailey.

That’s when one student grabbed a gun out of a backpack and shot at the invader who was watching the men. The gunman ran out of the apartment.

The student then ran to the room where the second gunman, identified by police as 23-year-old Calvin Lavant, was holding the women.

“Apparently the guy was getting ready to rape his girlfriend. So he told the girls to get down and he started shooting. The guy jumped out of the window,” said Bailey.

A neighbor heard the shots and heard someone running nearby.

“And I heard someone say, ‘Someone help me. Call the police. Somebody call the police,’” said a neighbor.

The neighbor said she believes it was Lavant, who was found dead near his apartment, only one building away.

Bailey said he is just thankful one student risked his life to keep others alive.

“I think all of us are really cognizant of the fact that we could have all been killed,” said Bailey.

One female student was shot several times during the crossfire. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Police said they are close to making the arrest of the second suspect.

Resident shoots, kills intruder in Midvale apartment break-in
As many as 10 storm Midvale home; one man is killed.

The Salt Lake Tribune

Salt Lake Tribune
Updated:05/06/2009 02:16:11 PM MDT

Midvale » A home invasion ended in a deadly spray of bullets early Tuesday when a Midvale man wrested a gun from one of the intruders and opened fire on them.

As many as 10 people were waiting outside an apartment near 1000 East and Watercress Lane (6995 South) when a 26-year-old answered a knock on the door about 1:30 a.m., said Midvale police Sgt. John Salazar. Wielding guns and knives, they pushed their way into the apartment, fighting the man and stabbing him in the hand, Salazar said. The man fled the apartment, followed by several assailants.

Still inside were the man's two nieces, 14 and 22, and the 22-year-old's boyfriend. One of the intruders hit the older sister, angering her boyfriend, Salazar said.

The boyfriend, 23, fought with the man and took hold of his gun.

He began shooting in the apartment, hitting another intruder. The heavily tattooed 31-year-old man, carrying two knives and a gun, was shot three times, Salazar said. He died in the apartment as the other attackers fled.

"I heard the screaming and I heard the gunshots," said neighbor Arun Sayam.

At least four shots were fired inside the apartment and at least three more outside. Investigators say one of the bullets also struck a female attacker, leaving a trail of blood outside.

Salazar said none of the bullets fired entered any of the surrounding apartments at the Springs of the Country Woods complex.

"I'm amazed that no one else was hurt," he said.

David Sandford, who lives in a second-story apartment just yards from where the shooting occurred, said he was listening to the television and reading a book when he heard five shots.

Sandford went to his bedroom and grabbed his gun for protection.

"I just wasn't sure what was going on," he said.

Sandford then went to his balcony and saw several people run south and one person run north.

Sandford, who has lived at the complex for about a year, called the attack "kind of disturbing."

Other witnesses, some huddled behind a trash bin in the parking lot, told police one of the attackers ran into a downstairs garage. Police used an explosive to force their way in but didn't find anyone.

Later, investigators recovered a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun and a .40-caliber handgun that had been tossed onto the roof of a nearby carport.

Police on Tuesday were still trying to determine a motive for the attack and confirm the identity of the man who was killed.

No arrests have been made.
